A Nature-Inspired Swarm of Aerial Rovers for Mars

NECTAR, a drone concept, was developed to efficiently explore Mars by using swarm intelligence. The drones are inspired by the flight mechanics of bees and use the principles of biomimicry. The UAVs are equipped with special wing mechanisms and modular functions for versatile missions.

The drones cooperate with each other and are supported by a central base camp that performs important functions such as analyzing samples, recharging, and accommodation during Martian nights. With a new approach of utilizing many small robots instead of one large one, NECTAR aims to transform exploration efforts on the Red Planet.
