Ceramic experiments that incorporate by-products from the furniture industry

In this project, I examined the by-products generated during furniture production at Fritz Hansen and used them to explore the possibilities of ceramics. Through my experiments, I discovered that combining their stone dust with the ash from their leftover veneer could generate a stabile stoneware glaze. This glaze got characteristics such as translucency, a subtle green hue, and a highly crystalline appearance. I also conducted experiments on the clay’s structure. By incorporating by-products, I wanted to create a product that not only reflects the production process but also could change the characteristics of the ceramic. The inclusion of sawdust in the clay gave an interesting result. It made the clay lighter in weight making it possible to create larger structures with less amount of clay. It contributed to increased strength and it also created an interesting porous structure that makes the ceramic sound absorbent.
